9 Real Causes, and Exactly How to Fix Each One
Heat is the quiet killer of computers. Over the years, more machines have landed on my bench killed off by running hot for too long than by just about anything else — and the frustrating part is that almost all of it is preventable. If your fans are screaming, your laptop is too hot to keep on your lap, or your PC keeps shutting itself off mid-task, this guide is for you. I'll walk through the nine causes I actually see, in roughly the order they're likely, with a real fix for each. Most of them you can sort out yourself in an afternoon.
1 First — Is It Actually Overheating?
Before you tear anything apart, let's confirm heat is the real problem. Here are the signs I look for as a technician:
Fans running loud and constant, even when you're not doing much. Hot air or a hot chassis — the keyboard or underside is uncomfortable to touch. Random shutdowns or restarts, especially during games, video, or heavy work — that's the computer protecting itself. Sudden slowdowns (called thermal throttling — the chip deliberately slows itself to cool down). And the burning-dust smell or, in bad cases, a system that won't even start.
A computer shutting itself off is a safety feature, not a glitch — it's pulling the plug before the heat damages the chips. If yours is doing that regularly, don't just keep restarting it and pushing through. Sustained high heat shortens the life of every component inside, and that's when a $40 cleaning turns into a $400 repair. Take it seriously.
2 Cause #1 — Dust (The Usual Suspect)
If I had to bet on one cause sight-unseen, it's dust. Over months and years, vents and fans pack with it like felt, and it acts as an insulating blanket trapping heat exactly where you don't want it. This is the single most common overheating cause I see, by a mile.
Power down and unplug first. For a desktop, open the side panel and blow out the fans, heatsink and vents with a can of compressed air — hold the fan blades still so they don't spin and generate voltage. 3 Cause #2 — Blocked Airflow
This one's almost entirely a laptop problem, and it's self-inflicted (no judgment — everyone does it). Using a laptop on a bed, couch, blanket or your actual lap blocks the intake vents underneath, and the machine slowly cooks itself.
Use it on a hard, flat surface — a desk, a tray, a lap desk, anything that lets air reach the vents. 4 Cause #3 — Dried-Out Thermal Paste
Between your processor and its heatsink is a thin layer of thermal paste that carries heat away from the chip. On machines more than four or five years old, that paste dries out and stops doing its job — and temperatures climb even though everything looks clean.
Reapplying fresh thermal paste is cheap and can drop temperatures 10–20°C on an older machine. It's a straightforward job on a desktop if you're comfortable removing a heatsink — clean off the old paste, apply a pea-sized dot, reseat. On laptops it's fiddlier (you're often deep into disassembly), so unless you're confident, this is the point I'd hand it to a technician.
5 Cause #4 — Something's Hammering the CPU
If a program (or several) is running the processor flat-out, it'll run hot no matter how clean the machine is. Sometimes that's legitimate software; sometimes it's a runaway process, a browser with 50 tabs, or something that shouldn't be there at all.
Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), click the CPU column to sort, and see what's pinned at the top. If it's something you don't recognize eating 80–100%, that's your culprit. 6 Cause #5 — Hidden Malware (Especially Crypto-Miners)
This one ties directly to that last point and deserves its own spot. A whole category of malware exists purely to hijack your computer's processor or graphics card to mine cryptocurrency for someone else. The symptom is exactly what you'd expect: a machine running hot and loud, fans blasting, while you're doing nothing demanding.

7 Cause #6 — A Failing or Stuck Fan
Fans are mechanical, and mechanical things wear out. A fan that's seized, clogged at the bearing, or spinning slowly can't move enough air — and the machine overheats even if everything else is fine.
Listen and look. A healthy fan spins up smoothly; a dying one rattles, grinds, makes a clicking or buzzing noise, or doesn't spin at all. After cleaning, if a fan still isn't turning or sounds rough, it needs replacing. Fans are inexpensive parts — the labour to get to them is the variable, especially on slim laptops.
8 Cause #7 — A Hot Room (Yes, Really)
Computers are rated to run in normal room temperatures. Park one in direct sunlight, next to a heat vent, or in a stuffy room during a summer heatwave, and you've stacked the deck against it before it does any work.
Keep the machine out of direct sun and away from radiators or heat registers. Give a desktop tower a few inches of clearance on all sides. In a genuinely hot room, a fan moving air across the area — or just better ventilation — helps more than people expect.
9 Cause #8 — Power Settings & Outdated Drivers
Sometimes the machine is working harder than it needs to. An aggressive "maximum performance" power plan keeps the processor running hot for no benefit during everyday use, and out-of-date BIOS or chipset/graphics drivers can mismanage fan curves and power.
On Windows, set your power plan to Balanced for normal use (Settings → System → Power). Then make sure Windows Update is current, and grab the latest BIOS and graphics drivers from your manufacturer's site — these updates genuinely include thermal and fan-control fixes. Free, and sometimes that's the whole problem.
10 Cause #9 — A Swollen or Degraded Battery (Laptops)
An aging laptop battery can run warm on its own, and a failing one can physically swell. A swollen battery isn't just a heat issue — it's a safety issue.
If your laptop's case is bulging, the trackpad is lifting, or the bottom no longer sits flat, stop using it and don't charge it. A swollen lithium battery is a genuine fire risk. Power it down and get the battery replaced by someone who knows what they're doing — this is not a "wait and see" situation.
11 What Temperatures Are Actually Normal?
People panic at numbers that are perfectly fine, so here's a rough reality check. You can read your temps with a free monitoring tool (HWMonitor and Core Temp are the ones I reach for).

Brief spikes into the 80s under heavy load aren't an emergency. Sustained 90°C+, or hitting those temps just sitting idle, is what tells you something on this list needs fixing.
12 Quick Questions I Get a Lot
Yes. The occasional shutdown won't kill it, but sustained heat over months degrades the processor, battery and other components and shortens the machine's life. That's exactly why it's worth fixing rather than ignoring.
Twice a year for most people. More often if you have pets, smoke indoors, or the computer sits on the floor where it inhales everything.
A fan that kicks in under load is normal. A fan running loud and constant even at idle usually means heat isn't escaping — start with dust and airflow.
As a short-term band-aid in a pinch, sure, it'll help. But it's treating the symptom — find and fix the actual cause from the list above.
13 The Bottom Line
Nine times out of ten, an overheating computer comes down to dust, blocked airflow, or old thermal paste — all cheap and fixable. Work down this list roughly in order: confirm it's really heat, clean the dust, sort out airflow, then move to paste, software, and the rest. The payoff is real: a computer that runs cool runs faster, quieter, and lasts years longer. Heat is the one problem where a little maintenance saves you the most money down the road.
