Why Is My WiFi So Slow?
8 Real Reasons — And How to Fix Each One
Few things are as quietly maddening as WiFi that drags — the spinning buffer wheel, the video call that freezes, the page that won't load. After 25 years of fixing this stuff, I can tell you the cause is almost never as mysterious as it feels. Here are the eight reasons I run into most, ordered from the quickest free fixes to the bigger ones, so you can work down the list and stop at whatever solves it.
1 You Haven't Restarted Your Router in Ages
I know, I know — everyone's tired of "have you turned it off and on again." But routers are tiny computers that run 24/7 for months or years, and they get bogged down, overheat, and clog up just like any other machine. A huge share of the slow-WiFi calls I get are solved before I even arrive, just by power-cycling the router.
Unplug your router (and modem, if it's a separate box) from the wall. Wait a full 30 seconds — this clears the memory and lets it cool — then plug the modem back in first, wait for its lights to settle, then the router. Give it two or three minutes to fully come back. Do this every month or so and you'll head off a lot of slowdowns.
2 Too Many Devices Fighting for Bandwidth
Your internet connection is like a pipe, and everything in your home drinks from it at once — phones, TVs, smart speakers, security cameras, the kids' tablets. When someone starts a big download or streams 4K video, everyone else's slice gets thinner. Often "slow WiFi" is really just a traffic jam.
Think about what's running when things get slow. Pause big downloads, game-console updates, and cloud backups until you're done with what matters. If this happens constantly, your router may support QoS (Quality of Service) settings that let you prioritize, say, video calls over background traffic — and it might be a sign your plan is simply too small for your household (see #8).
3 Your Router Is in a Bad Spot
People love to hide the router — in a closet, behind the TV, down in the basement, tucked beside a stack of other electronics. Unfortunately, that's exactly how you choke a WiFi signal. Radio waves don't care about your décor; they care about distance and obstacles.
Move the router to a central, open, elevated spot — up on a shelf, out in the open, roughly in the middle of where you actually use the internet. Keep it away from thick walls, large metal objects, fish tanks, and especially the microwave and cordless phones, which interfere with it. Even moving it a few feet can make a real difference.
4 You're Too Far Away (Dead Zones)
WiFi gets weaker the farther you go and the more walls, floors, and furniture it has to punch through. If it's great in the living room but crawls in the back bedroom, you've got a coverage problem, not necessarily a speed problem.
For a small place, repositioning (see #3) may be enough. For a bigger or multi-floor home, a mesh WiFi system — a set of units that blanket the whole house in one network — is the modern fix and works far better than the old single-point "extenders." 5 You're on the Wrong (or Crowded) Band
Most routers broadcast two networks: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 2.4 band reaches farther but is slower and badly congested — your neighbours, your baby monitor, and half the gadgets in your house all crowd onto it. The 5 GHz band is much faster but shorter-range.
When you're near the router, connect to the 5 GHz network for the speed (it's often the one with "5G" or a different name in your WiFi list). Save 2.4 GHz for far-away devices that just need to stay connected. Newer routers do this switching automatically — but it's worth checking which one your main device is actually on.
6 Background Updates and Bandwidth Hogs
Sometimes the culprit is one device quietly eating everything. Windows updates, phone backups, cloud photo syncs, and game launchers downloading patches can saturate your connection without you ever opening them. To you, the WiFi just "went slow" for no reason.
Check your devices for updates or syncs running in the background. On Windows, Task Manager's Performance → open Resource Monitor shows what's using the network. Schedule big updates for overnight when you can. And if a device is using bandwidth that you can't explain at all, it's worth ruling out malware — a quick scan never hurts.
7 Your Router (or Its Firmware) Is Old
WiFi standards keep improving, and a router from eight or ten years ago simply can't deliver the speeds modern plans offer — it's a bottleneck no plan upgrade will fix. Outdated firmware can also leave a router slow and insecure.
If you go searching for a fix, you'll be flooded with "WiFi booster" and "speed optimizer" apps and miracle plug-in gadgets. The honest truth: the vast majority do nothing, and some are just adware or worse. No app can create bandwidth your router and plan don't have. Real fixes are the boring ones on this list — placement, hardware, and your plan.
Log into your router (the address is usually on a sticker on the unit) and check for a firmware update. If the router is more than about five years old, replacing it — or asking your provider for a newer one — is often the single biggest upgrade you can make.
8 Your Plan (or Your ISP) Is the Real Limit
Here's the one nobody wants to hear: sometimes your WiFi is fine and you're simply paying for a slow connection — or your provider is having a bad day. WiFi is just the wireless link inside your home; it can't be faster than the internet plan feeding it.
Run a free speed test (search "speed test") while plugged directly into the router with an ethernet cable if you can. Compare the result to what you're paying for. If you're getting close to your plan's rated speed, the bottleneck is the plan — time to upgrade or shop around. If you're getting a tiny fraction of it consistently, call your provider; the problem may be on their end.
