How to Clone Your Hard Drive to an SSD
Without Reinstalling Windows
The good news most people don't realize before they start: Installing a new SSD doesn't mean losing all your stuff, reinstalling Windows, hunting down all your programs, and starting from scratch. It COULD mean that if you want to start fresh, but it's unnecessary. You can copy your entire drive — Windows, your programs, your settings, your files, all of it — onto the new SSD exactly as it sits now. It's called cloning, and it's the single most satisfying upgrade I do, because the machine boots up the same as always, just dramatically faster. I've been cloning drives for the better part of my over 30 years fixing computers, and the tools have come and gone — but the idea has never changed. Let me show you how to do it yourself.

1 What Cloning Actually Does (And Why You'd Want To)
Cloning makes an exact, bootable copy of one drive onto another. Not a folder-by-folder copy of your documents — a copy of everything, including the hidden parts of the drive that let Windows start up in the first place. When it's done right, you pull the old drive out, put the new SSD in its place, and the computer turns on like nothing happened. Same desktop, same programs, same wallpaper. It just went from feeling tired to feeling new.
The alternative is a clean install: wiping the SSD, installing Windows fresh, then reinstalling every program and copying your files back over. There's a time and place for a clean install — if your Windows is a mess, a fresh start can be the better fix. But for most people who just want their machine to be faster, cloning saves hours and a lot of headache.
A quick story from the bench. I had a client, Dave, with an old Toshiba Satellite laptop. He'd gone out and bought a brand new machine, and I went over to his place to pick up both, with the plan of moving all his stuff over to the new one. I was set to do exactly that — until I realized he didn't have the original install files for a lot of the programs he wanted moved. As we talked it over, it struck me that the easier road for both of us might be to just breathe new life into the old machine instead.
So that's what we decided, and I took just his Toshiba back to my shop to work on it, leaving the new laptop with him. It had a single 4GB stick of RAM and a 1TB hard drive — but Dave was only using a small fraction of that 1TB. I added a second stick to bring him up to 8GB, and swapped the big hard drive for a new 250GB SSD, which was plenty for what he actually had on there. Then I cloned his old drive onto the SSD. When it booted back up, it was dramatically faster than before — I suspect his old drive was getting tired and had quietly slowed down over the years, the way they do. The whole job, parts and my time together, ran him about $300.
He was so astonished at how much faster his "old" computer felt that he returned the brand new laptop and kept using the Toshiba. That's the thing people don't expect about this upgrade: the SSD is doing the heavy lifting on that speed jump, and it can be enough to make a machine you'd written off feel new again.
Your new SSD has to be big enough to hold everything you're actually using on the old drive — not the old drive's total size. A 1TB hard drive with only 300GB of stuff on it clones happily onto a 500GB SSD. What matters is the used space, not the label on the box. If you're not sure how much you're using, open This PC in File Explorer and look at the bar under your main drive.
2 What You'll Need
Three things, and you may already have two of them:
- The new SSD. If you haven't bought one yet, our guide to the best SSDs for upgrading in 2026 walks through SATA vs NVMe and which drives are worth it. For an older machine, a plain SATA SSD is almost always the right call.
- A way to connect both drives at once. On a desktop tower this is easy — there's usually a spare SATA port and power connector inside. On a laptop, which only holds one drive at a time, you'll need a SATA-to-USB adapter or an external drive enclosure so the new SSD can be plugged in over USB while you clone.
- The cloning software. This is the part that used to be a moving target — and there's one thing you'll want to know about cost before you start. More on that in a second.
3 The Software: What I've Used, and What You Should Use
Before we get into cloning tools, let me save you money if you don't actually need one. If all you're doing is moving your files — documents, photos, music, that folder of stuff on the D: drive — you don't need any special software at all. Plug in the other drive and copy and paste, the same as you would to a USB stick. Windows does that for free, and it works fine — as you've probably done before.
Cloning software earns its keep for one specific job: copying the drive Windows boots from so the new drive starts up on its own. You can hand-copy every Windows file you can see and the new drive still won't boot — because the parts that make a drive bootable are hidden and don't come along with a normal copy and paste. That's the whole reason these tools exist, and it's the job this article is about. So if you're just after your files, close this tab and go copy them. If you want your whole system moved onto the SSD so it boots and runs exactly as before, read on.
This is where I have some history with the tools. For many, many years my all-time favourite was Norton Ghost — it was so common that "ghosting a drive" became shop slang for cloning one — no matter which clone tool you actually used. But Ghost never kept up with modern drives and newer versions of Windows, it got flakier and flakier over time, and Symantec eventually discontinued the consumer version altogether. It simply won't run properly on today's machines.
After Ghost, my go-to for a long stretch was the free version of Macrium Reflect, which was excellent. But Macrium retired its free edition — the last free version stopped getting updates and was only ever tested up through older builds of Windows 10 and 11, and the current product is paid-only now. So the free Macrium I relied on for years isn't really an option to recommend anymore.
These days, on the bench, I clone with LazeSoft from a Hiren's BootCD rescue environment — but that's a technician's setup, booting off a USB stick into a whole toolkit of recovery software. It's more than a person doing one drive swap at home needs to wade into.
For you — doing this once, on your own computer, wanting something straightforward — the tool I'd point you to is AOMEI Backupper. AOMEI has a free version — but unfortunately the free version only clones data drives, not your Windows drive. For cloning the Windows drive it costs a little bit of money, through their paid Professional version.* Cloning the drive Windows actually boots from is a bigger job than a plain file copy — it has to carry over the hidden, bootable parts of the drive as well — and that's the feature the free version leaves out. It's not really AOMEI being greedy so much as where the whole industry has landed: the same thing happened with Macrium, and it's why the free rides on system cloning have mostly dried up. The Professional version is a modest one-time cost — check the current price on their site, since it can change from time to time — and for a one-time job that moves your entire system over, plenty of people decide that's worth it rather than wrestling with a clunkier free option. Whether it's worth it to you is your call. My dad always used to say, "something is only worth what you're willing to pay" — so if fiddling with the free version to save a few dollars isn't how you want to spend your afternoon, then paying for the clean one-step version is worth it to you, and that's what counts. I just don't want you getting three steps in and hitting a paywall you weren't expecting.
* There is a way to get Windows onto the new drive with the free version, but it takes a few more steps: you'd back up the whole system to another drive or partition, then run a recovery to put it onto the SSD. It can be done — but it's more fiddly, and a lot more stress and grief if anything goes sideways partway through. For most people doing this once, the clean one-step clone is worth the modest cost.

I know you're eager to get to the fun part. Do this first anyway.
Cloning is usually painless. But "usually" isn't "always," and over the years I've seen the clones that went sideways — a drive that was quietly failing, a cable that came loose, a power blip mid-copy. None of that can hurt you if your important files already live somewhere else. Copy your irreplaceable stuff — photos, documents, anything you can't re-download — onto a separate external drive before you start. Five minutes now buys you total peace of mind.
5 Step Two: Connect the New SSD
Get both drives talking to the computer at the same time.
- Desktop tower: Power down, open the side panel, and connect the SSD to a spare SATA data port on the motherboard and a SATA power connector from the power supply. You don't need to mount it neatly yet — just get it connected so it powers on. Then boot back into Windows.
- Laptop: Leave your laptop as-is and connect the new SSD externally through a SATA-to-USB adapter or an enclosure. Windows will see it as a USB drive. That's exactly what you want for the clone.
When Windows starts, it may pop up asking to format the new drive. Don't format it — just close that box. The clone will handle the drive for you.
6 Step Three: Run the Clone
Here's the heart of it. In AOMEI Backupper:
- Open the program and choose Clone, then Disk Clone.
- Pick your old drive as the source — the one Windows is currently running from.
- Pick your new SSD as the destination. Double-check this. The destination gets overwritten, so you want to be absolutely sure which drive is which — go by the size and label, and if two drives are the same size, disconnect anything else you don't need plugged in so there's no confusion. A good habit here is to give your drives clear names ahead of time — I'll label them something like 1TB_drive or 250G_SSD so there's zero guesswork about which one I'm looking at when it's time to clone. (Not sure how to rename a drive? In File Explorer, right-click the drive and choose Rename.) If you'd rather not bother, just go by the drive size instead — that's usually the easiest tell. Where it gets tricky is when both drives are the same size. In the clone software you'll often see them listed as "Disk 0," "Disk 1," and so on — as a rule of thumb the original is usually Disk 0 and the drive you just added is the higher number, but don't bet your data on that alone. Confirm it by the details the software shows — the model name, or which one still has your Windows partitions on it — before you pick the destination.
- Turn on the SSD Alignment option if it's offered. This is a small checkbox that makes a real difference to how fast the finished SSD runs.
- Start it, and let it run. Depending on how much data you have and how you've connected the drive, this can take anywhere from twenty minutes to a couple of hours.
Once it starts, leave it alone until it finishes. Don't put the computer to sleep, don't unplug the drive, and if it's a laptop, keep it on the charger the whole time. A clone that gets interrupted partway leaves you with an incomplete copy — no harm done to your original drive, but you'll just have to start the clone over.
7 Step Four: Swap the Drives and Boot Up
When the clone reports it's finished, shut the computer all the way down. Now put the SSD in as the drive the computer boots from:
- Desktop: Physically swap the SSD into the old drive's spot, or set the SSD as the first boot device in your BIOS. I wouldn't leave both drives connected — two identical clones with the same Windows on them can confuse the boot process, and it's easy to end up working on the wrong drive later. Once the clone's done, disconnect the old drive (or pull it out) so the SSD is the only one the computer sees at boot. You can always reconnect the old one afterward as extra storage.
- Laptop: Open the drive bay, take the old drive out, and put the SSD in its place. This is the same physical swap covered in our guide on how to replace a hard drive if you want the step-by-step on opening the machine.
Power on. If everything went right, the computer boots straight into Windows — your Windows, exactly as you left it — only now it starts in a fraction of the time. That first fast boot is the moment the whole job pays off.
Nine times out of ten, a clone that won't boot is just the computer trying to start from the wrong drive. Go into your BIOS or boot menu (usually by tapping F2, F12, Del, or Esc right as the computer powers on — the exact key depends on your machine) and make sure the SSD is set as the first boot device. If it still won't go and you're stuck, that's a fine point to bring it to a technician rather than forcing it.
8 Step Five: Put the Old Drive to Work
Don't throw the old drive out. Once you've confirmed the SSD boots and everything's there, you've got two good options for the old one. You can wipe it and reuse it as extra storage — reconnecting it to a desktop as a second drive, or dropping a laptop's old drive into that same USB enclosure you used for the clone to turn it into a portable backup drive. (Wiping it first is what clears off the old copy of Windows, so you won't run into that two-identical-drives confusion.) Or you can just set it on a shelf, untouched: it's now a complete snapshot of your system from clone day, which is about the best accidental backup you could ask for.
