A drive upgrade is the single most impactful thing you can do to an aging computer — and also the one most people put off, because it sounds like a lot of decisions at once. Which drive? SATA or NVMe? Clone the old one or start fresh? How do you actually get it open without breaking something? This page is the map. 1 Should You Upgrade at All?

Before you spend a dime, it's worth confirming the drive is actually your bottleneck. A slow boot that's fine once you're running usually points to the drive. A computer that's sluggish everywhere, even for simple tasks, might be RAM, malware, or something else entirely.

2 HDD vs. SSD — What You Actually Gain

If you're still on a traditional spinning hard drive, this is the easiest yes in computer repair. An SSD is 5 to 20 times faster at reading and writing data. Boot times that used to take two minutes drop to twenty seconds. Programs open almost instantly. It's the closest thing to a magic fix I've seen in over 30 years of doing this — and it's very likely you already have an SSD as your primary boot drive, and this is about upgrading storage or adding an additional drive to your PC.

3 Clone or Fresh Install?

Once you've got the new drive, you need to decide how Windows gets onto it. Cloning copies everything over exactly as it was — files, programs, settings — so you're up and running fast. A fresh install wipes the slate clean, which takes longer but leaves you with a genuinely clean system.

Which One's Right for You

4 Doing the Physical Swap

This is the part that sounds scarier than it is. Desktops take about ten minutes once you know where everything is; laptops are a bit more fiddly but still very doable at home.

5 Tools You'll Need

Beyond a screwdriver, the one tool most people don't already have is a way to connect the new drive externally so you can clone it before the physical swap — that's what a SATA-to-USB adapter or an external enclosure is for.

6 What to Do With Your Old Drive

If the old drive was healthy, don't just let it sit in a drawer. Dropped into an enclosure, it becomes a portable backup drive for a few bucks — a good home for the photos and documents you just moved off it in the first place.

⚠ If It Was Failing, Not Reusing It

Don't put a failing drive into service as a backup drive — that's the worst place for one. If it contained sensitive data, either physically destroy it or use a secure erasure tool. Many electronics stores and recyclers accept old hard drives.
