How to Speed Up an Old PC
— 10 Fixes That Actually Work

Before you spend money on a new computer, try these — most of them are free, and one of them will make your old machine feel brand new.

"Should I just buy a new computer?" — a very common question I get asked can often be answered with a "no, it's not necessary for what you do." A computer that's 4, 5, even 7 years old can often be brought back to life with some straightforward fixes that anyone can do. I've seen machines that people were ready to throw out boot up like the day they were bought — sometimes with nothing more than a $60 part and 20 minutes of work. This guide covers everything I do when a client brings in a slow PC, in the exact order I do it. We start with the free stuff and work our way up to the upgrades that cost money but make the biggest difference.

1 Clean Up Your Startup Programs

This is the first thing I check on every slow PC that comes into the shop — and it's the fix that gets the biggest eye-roll when I tell people about it, because it seems too simple. But here's the thing: over the years, programs quietly add themselves to your startup list. Every one of them launches when you turn on your computer, and every one of them eats a little bit of your computer's valuable resources while sitting in the background doing nothing useful. Sometimes, on an older machine, I might find 15 or 20 startup programs can easily add two or three minutes to your boot time.

The Fix

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then click the Startup apps tab (in Windows 11) or the Startup tab (in Windows 10). You'll see a list of everything that launches at boot, along with its "Startup impact" rating. Disable anything you don't need running immediately when your computer starts. Common culprits include Spotify, Discord, Steam, Adobe Creative Cloud, OneDrive, Teams, Skype, and various manufacturer utilities. You're not uninstalling these programs — you're just telling them not to launch automatically. You can still open them whenever you want. 2 Uninstall Programs You Don't Use

This goes hand-in-hand with the startup cleanup. Most computers — especially ones that came from a big-box store — are loaded with software you never asked for and never use. Manufacturer "utility suites," trial versions of antivirus software that expired three years ago, toolbars, games you played once, and apps that came bundled with something else you installed. All of this takes up disk space, resources, and usually runs background processes that slow things down.

The Fix

Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings → Apps & features (Windows 10). Sort by Size to find the biggest offenders first, then sort by Install date to see what was installed most recently. If you don't recognize something, search for it online before removing it — but if it's clearly something you installed and never use, uninstall it. Be ruthless. A leaner system is a faster system.

3 Run Disk Cleanup and Turn On Storage Sense

Windows tends to accumulate junk over time — temporary files, old update caches, error logs, thumbnails, Recycle Bin contents, and leftover installation files. On a machine that hasn't been cleaned in a few years, this can add up to 10 GB or more of wasted space. More importantly, if your drive is nearly full (over 85%), Windows slows down dramatically because it doesn't have room to use for virtual memory and swap files.

The Fix

Quick cleanup: Press the Windows key, type Disk Cleanup, and open it. Select your main drive (usually C:), then check all the boxes — especially Temporary files, Windows Update Cleanup, and Recycle Bin. Click Clean up system files for even more options. This is completely safe.

Keep it clean automatically: Go to Settings → System → Storage and turn on Storage Sense. This automatically deletes temporary files, empties the Recycle Bin after 30 days, and cleans up old Downloads folder content. Set it and forget it.

4 Turn Off Visual Effects and Animations

Windows has all sorts of pretty animations — smooth scrolling, transparent title bars, window shadows, fading effects, and sliding transitions. On a new computer with a dedicated graphics card, you'd never notice them. On an older machine with integrated graphics, they're eating some of your limited resources and performance for purely cosmetic reasons.

The Fix

Press the Windows key, type "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows" and open it. Select "Adjust for best performance" to turn everything off — or select "Custom" and keep just "Smooth edges of screen fonts" checked (turning that off makes text look terrible). Click Apply. The difference is surprisingly noticeable on older hardware.

5 Check for Malware

A slow computer isn't always just an old computer — sometimes it's an infected computer. Malware running in the background can consume CPU, RAM, and network bandwidth while you have no idea it's there. Cryptominers are especially common right now; they use your processor to mine cryptocurrency for someone else, and the only symptom you'll notice is that everything runs slowly and your fans are always spinning.

The Fix

Run a full scan with Windows Security (built into Windows 10 and 11) — go to Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Full scan. This takes a while but checks every file on your system. For a second opinion, download and run Malwarebytes Free — it catches things that Windows Defender sometimes misses, and the free version works perfectly for on-demand scanning. 6 Update Your Drivers

Outdated drivers — especially graphics drivers — can cause sluggish performance, screen flickering, and even crashes. Windows Update installs basic drivers, but they're often months behind what the manufacturer has released. Getting the latest driver directly from the source can make a real difference, particularly for graphics-heavy tasks, video playback, and gaming.

The Fix

For your graphics driver, go directly to the manufacturer's website: nvidia.com, amd.com, or intel.com. Download the latest driver for your specific card. While sometimes temporarily useful, we don't recommend the use of third-party "driver updater" tools — most of them are borderline scamware at best and outright malware at worst. I see them on client machines all the time, begging for money, checking for drivers that don't have updates, and sometimes causing more problems than they solve.

For everything else, Windows Update handles it reasonably well. Go to Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates and install any driver updates listed there.

⚠ Avoid "Driver Updater" Software

Programs like Driver Booster, Driver Easy, DriverFix, and similar tools are not worth your time. That's why we don't generally recommend them. On rare occasions I've used them to get a specific, hard to find driver, it's worked, and then I uninstalled the driver-finder program. Often, they flag perfectly fine drivers as "outdated" to scare you into buying a premium version, and they can install incorrect or unstable drivers that make things worse. Stick to Windows Update and the manufacturer's own website. That's what every reputable technician does.

7 The #1 Upgrade: Replace Your Hard Drive with an SSD

If your old PC still has a traditional spinning hard drive (HDD), this is the single most impactful upgrade you can make. Nothing else comes close. An SSD (Solid State Drive) is anywhere from 5 to 20 times faster than a hard drive at reading and writing data, and the difference is immediately obvious — boot times drop from minutes to seconds, programs open almost instantly, and the whole system feels snappy and responsive again.

I've done this upgrade many, many times, and the reaction from clients is always the same: "It feels like a brand new computer." Because it does. This one upgrade extends the useful life of a PC by 3 to 5 years, easily.

What You Need to Know

For most older PCs and laptops: You need a 2.5-inch SATA SSD. These use the same connector as your old hard drive, so they're a direct swap. A 500 GB model is enough for most people; 1 TB gives you room to grow. Prices have gone up a bit in 2026 due to AI-related component shortages, but you can still find a good 1 TB SATA SSD in the $100–$150 CAD range.

For newer PCs (2018+): Check if your motherboard has an M.2 slot — if it does, you can use an NVMe SSD, which is even faster. These are small sticks that plug directly into the motherboard, no cables needed.

The swap itself: You can either clone your old drive to the new SSD (which copies everything — Windows, programs, files — so you pick up right where you left off) or do a fresh install of Windows (cleaner, faster, but you'll need to reinstall your programs). 8 Add More RAM

If your computer has 4 GB of RAM, it's going to struggle with modern Windows. In 2026, 8 GB is the practical minimum for basic use, and 16 GB is the sweet spot for comfortable multitasking — having a browser with a dozen tabs open, running Office, and playing a YouTube video without everything grinding to a halt. If you're frequently seeing high memory usage in Task Manager (above 85–90%), more RAM will help.

RAM prices have climbed significantly in 2026 due to global component shortages driven by AI demand, but it's still one of the cheaper upgrades you can make — and one of the easiest.

What You Need to Know

Check what you have: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, click the Performance tab, then click Memory. It tells you how much RAM you have and how many slots are in use.

Check what your computer supports: Not all RAM is the same. You need to match the type (DDR3, DDR4, or DDR5), the speed, and the form factor (SODIMM for laptops, DIMM for desktops). Crucial's website (crucial.com) has a free scanner tool that tells you exactly what your computer takes — I use it in the shop all the time.

Installation: Desktop RAM is one of the easiest upgrades in computing — open the case, push the clips, press the stick in until it clicks. Laptop RAM is usually accessible through a panel on the bottom, but some newer laptops have RAM soldered to the motherboard and can't be upgraded at all. The Crucial scanner will tell you if that's your situation.

9 The Nuclear Option: A Clean Install of Windows

If you've tried everything above and the computer is still dragging, a fresh install of Windows can work wonders. Over the years, Windows accumulates registry bloat, leftover files from uninstalled programs, fragmented settings, and hundreds of other small inefficiencies that add up. A clean install wipes the slate and gives you a fresh, lean system that runs the way it did when it was new.

This is something I do regularly in the shop for machines that are "software slow" — where the hardware is fine but years of accumulated digital clutter have bogged everything down.

The Fix

1. Back up everything important first. Documents, photos, bookmarks, anything on your Desktop — copy it all to an external drive or cloud storage. A clean install erases everything.

2. Create a Windows installation USB. Go to microsoft.com, search for "Create Windows 11 installation media" (or Windows 10 if your PC doesn't support 11), and download the Media Creation Tool. You'll need an 8 GB or larger USB drive.

3. Boot from the USB and choose "Custom: Install Windows only." Delete your existing partitions, let Windows create new ones, and install fresh.

4. Reinstall your drivers and programs. Windows will grab most drivers automatically via Windows Update, but grab your graphics driver from the manufacturer's site (see Section 6).

Combined with an SSD upgrade (Section 7), a clean install on a machine that's 4–6 years old will make it feel genuinely new. This combination is my go-to recommendation for clients who want maximum improvement without buying a new computer.

10 When It's Time to Let Go

I'd love to tell you every old PC can be saved, but that wouldn't be honest. Sometimes a computer has simply reached the end of its useful life. If the motherboard is failing, the CPU can't keep up with basic tasks even after a clean install, or the machine is so old that replacement parts cost more than a new budget laptop — it's time.

Here are some signs that upgrading isn't worth it anymore:

Signs It's Time for a New PC

It can't run a supported version of Windows. If your PC is stuck on Windows 10 and doesn't meet the requirements for Windows 11, you're on borrowed time — Microsoft ended Windows 10 support in October 2025, which means no more security updates. There is a paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) program that keeps patches coming through 2028, but most home users won't pay for that — and it's a temporary fix, not a long-term solution.

Upgrading costs more than half the price of a replacement. If an SSD, more RAM, and a new battery (for a laptop) together cost $300+ and a decent new machine costs $500, the math doesn't work.

The CPU is the bottleneck. If Task Manager shows your CPU pinned at 90–100% during normal tasks even after a clean install, no amount of SSD or RAM will fix it. The processor itself is too slow for modern software.

It's older than 8–10 years. At that age, even if you upgrade the storage and RAM, you may possibly run into motherboard failures, worn-out capacitors, or thermal issues in the near future, especially in a dusty environment (see our guide on Compressed Air for Cleaning Computers).
