Do I Need More RAM?
How to Tell & What to Do About It
RAM is one of those things people hear about but don't always understand — and that confusion leads to a lot of unnecessary spending. I've had clients come in wanting to buy 32 GB of RAM when their real problem was a dying hard drive. I've also had people struggling with a machine that had plenty of storage and a decent processor, but was choking on 4 GB of RAM from 2015. The fix was completely different in each case, but the symptom — "my computer is slow" — was exactly the same. This article will help you figure out whether RAM is actually your problem, how much you need in 2026, and whether upgrading is worth the money right now.
1 What RAM Actually Does (The Simple Version)
Think of RAM as your computer's short-term memory — the desk where it spreads out everything it's actively working on. Your hard drive or SSD is the filing cabinet where everything is stored long-term. When you open a program, your computer pulls it from the filing cabinet (storage) and puts it on the desk (RAM) so it can work with it quickly.
The bigger the desk, the more things you can have open at once without slowing down. When the desk gets full, your computer starts swapping things back and forth between the desk and the filing cabinet — this is called the swapfile (or page file), and it's Windows dynamically shuffling data between RAM and your storage drive to make room. That swapping process is painfully slow, especially on a traditional hard drive, because a hard drive reads and writes far slower than RAM does.
RAM is temporary — everything on the desk gets cleared when you shut down your computer. Also, as mentioned above, RAM is much faster than the storage drive — which is why having enough of it matters so much for everyday performance.
2 How to Check Your Current RAM Usage
Before you do anything else, check what you're actually working with. Windows makes this easy.
1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
2. Click the Performance tab, then click Memory on the left side.
You'll see several important numbers:
Total RAM: How much your computer has installed (e.g., 8 GB).
In use: How much is currently being used.
Available: How much is free for new tasks.
Slots used: At the bottom — shows how many RAM slots your motherboard has and how many are occupied (e.g., "2 of 4" means you have room to add more).
The key number to watch is the percentage of RAM in use during your normal workload. Don't test it with nothing running — use your computer the way you normally do. Open your usual browser tabs, your email, whatever programs you typically run. Then check.
3 Signs That RAM Is Your Bottleneck
Not every slow computer has a RAM problem. But if RAM is the issue, the symptoms tend to look like this:
Your RAM usage is consistently above 85–90% during normal use. This is the clearest sign. If Task Manager shows your memory at 90%+ while you're just browsing the web and checking email, you don't have enough.
Things slow down when you have multiple programs open. Your computer runs fine with one or two programs, but bogs down when you add more — especially browser tabs. Each Chrome tab uses 100–300 MB of RAM on its own, so 15–20 tabs can easily eat several gigabytes.
Programs take a long time to switch between. You click on a program in the taskbar and there's a noticeable delay before it appears — sometimes you see a white or blank window first. This is your computer pulling it back from the swap file because it ran out of room in RAM.
Your hard drive light is on constantly (if your PC has one). Constant disk activity during normal use often means your system is swapping — using storage as overflow memory because RAM is full.
If you get a "low memory" warning from Windows, you should definitely take the hint.
4 Signs That RAM Is Not Your Problem
This is just as important. If these describe your situation, adding RAM probably won't help — your problem is somewhere else.
Your RAM usage is under 60–70% and your computer is still slow. You have plenty of memory — the bottleneck is elsewhere. Check if your CPU is maxed out instead (also visible in Task Manager under the Performance tab).

Everything is slow, including simple tasks. If even opening a single program or typing in a document feels laggy, the problem is likely malware, a failing hard drive, or an overheating CPU — not RAM. Check our malware guide and overheating guide for those scenarios.
Your CPU is pinned at 90–100%. No amount of RAM will help if the processor itself can't keep up. This is common on very old machines (8–10+ years) where the CPU is simply too slow for modern software.
5 How Much RAM Do You Actually Need in 2026?
The short answer: more than you did a couple of years ago. Modern browsers, Windows background services, and even basic apps like Teams and Outlook are using more memory than ever. Here's a practical breakdown based on what I see in the shop every day:

Overkill for basic use, but great for power users. |
| 64 GB | Professional video/3D work, running local AI models, heavy software development | Only needed for specialized workloads. Most people will never need this much. |
For most people walking into my shop, the jump from 4 or 8 GB to 16 GB is the upgrade that makes the biggest real-world difference. Going from 16 to 32 helps too, but the improvement is less dramatic unless you're doing something demanding.
To be clear, Microsoft isn't saying 16 GB is outdated — it's still treated as a practical starting point for gaming. But the messaging shift is worth noting: 32 GB is increasingly being positioned not as an enthusiast-only upgrade, but as the safer, more future-proof choice. If you're gaming on 16 GB today, you're still fine. It's just a sign of where the baseline is heading in the next few years. (Source: VICE, May 2026)
6 RAM vs. SSD — Which Upgrade Comes First?
This is one of the most common questions I get, and the answer depends on what you already have.
If you still have a traditional hard drive (HDD): Upgrade to an SSD first — every time. The speed difference between a hard drive and an SSD is so massive that it will make your entire computer feel new, regardless of how much RAM you have. An SSD fixes slow boot times, slow program launches, and that general "everything feels sluggish" feeling.
If you already have an SSD but only 4–8 GB of RAM: RAM is your next upgrade. You've already got fast storage — now you need more room for your computer to work with.
If you have an SSD and 16 GB of RAM: You're probably fine. If things are still slow, the bottleneck is likely your CPU, and at that point you're looking at a new computer rather than an upgrade.
The best bang for your buck? An SSD and a RAM upgrade together. In my shop, this combination is the most common "bring it back to life" job I do on older machines — and the results speak for themselves.
7 How to Find Out What RAM Your Computer Takes
You can't just buy any RAM and plug it in. You need to match the type (DDR3, DDR4, or DDR5), the speed, and the form factor (SODIMM for laptops, DIMM for desktops). Get any of these wrong and the RAM either won't fit or won't work.
Option 1 — Crucial's Scanner: Go to crucial.com and use their free System Scanner tool. Download and run it — it reads your motherboard's specs and tells you exactly what type of RAM is compatible, how many slots you have, and the maximum your system supports. It's a very useful tool, especially for a computer repair person.
Option 2 — Task Manager: Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the Performance tab, click Memory. At the bottom, you'll see the speed (e.g., 2400 MHz, 3200 MHz) and how many slots are used. On Windows 11, it also shows whether you have DDR4 or DDR5.
Option 3 — Your computer's manual or support page: Search your computer's model number plus "memory specifications" or "RAM upgrade" and the manufacturer's support page will usually list exactly what's compatible.
8 Can Your RAM Even Be Upgraded?
Here's the catch that trips a lot of people up: not all computers can have their RAM upgraded. Many newer laptops — especially thin ultrabooks — have the RAM soldered directly to the motherboard. It's not a removable stick; it's permanently attached. That said, many of these laptops still include a single SODIMM slot alongside the soldered RAM, letting you add to what's already there — so even with soldered RAM, you can often at least double your total. If your laptop has soldered RAM with no open slot, you're stuck with whatever it came with.
The Crucial Scanner (from Section 7) will tell you straight away whether your RAM is upgradeable. If it says "Memory is not upgradeable" or shows zero available slots, that's your answer.
You can also check Task Manager — if it shows "Slots used: 0 of 0" or doesn't list slots at all, the RAM is likely soldered.
Desktops almost always have upgradeable RAM — standard DIMM slots that are easy to access.
Older laptops (pre-2020) usually have an access panel on the bottom with one or two SODIMM slots.
Newer thin laptops (many from 2020 onward) increasingly use soldered RAM. This is unfortunately becoming more common across all price ranges. It's one reason why buying the right amount of RAM upfront matters more than ever.
9 How to Install RAM (It's Easier Than You Think)
If you've confirmed your computer has open slots and you've bought the right type, the installation itself is one of the simplest hardware upgrades you can do.
1. Shut down your computer and unplug it. Press the power button once to discharge any residual power.
2. Open the side panel of your case (usually one or two thumbscrews on the back).
3. Find the RAM slots on your motherboard — they're the long, narrow slots usually near the CPU, with clips on one or both ends.
4. If you're adding to an existing stick, check your motherboard manual for the correct slot order. Most motherboards want you to use alternating slots (1 and 3, or 2 and 4) for dual-channel performance.
5. Open the clips, line up the notch on the RAM stick with the notch in the slot, and press down firmly until the clips snap into place. It takes a bit of pressure — don't be afraid of it, but make sure the notch is aligned first. If your motherboard only has a clip on one end, seat the fixed end first, then press down on the clipped end until it locks — trying to force both ends down at once can flex the stick or the slot. If it feels like you have to force it into place, stop and double-check the notch alignment — it's probably not lined up correctly.
6. Before closing the case, plug in and boot with the side panel still off. Once Windows starts up normally, confirm the new total under Settings → System → About (or Task Manager). If you hear abnormal beeping when you power on, that's usually a sign the RAM isn't seated properly — shut down and double-check that the sticks are fully clicked into place. Once you've confirmed everything looks right, shut down, close up the case, and you're done.
1. Shut down your laptop, unplug it, and remove the battery if it's removable.
2. Flip it over and look for a small access panel secured with one or two screws. Some laptops require removing the entire bottom panel instead.
3. The RAM slot(s) should be visible — small sticks held in place by metal clips on each side. On some laptop models, the RAM slots are tucked underneath the motherboard itself, which means you'd have to remove the motherboard to get to them. It's not a fun job, but on some laptops it's simply necessary. It sometimes feels like manufacturers make upgrades intentionally difficult to nudge people toward buying a new laptop instead — whether that's the actual intent or just a side effect of thinner designs, it's hard to say, but the end result is the same for the person trying to upgrade.
4. To remove old RAM, push the clips outward gently — the stick will pop up at an angle. Gently pull it out.
5. Insert the new stick at the same angle, then press it down flat until the clips snap into place.
6. Replace the panel, plug in, and boot.
Before handling RAM, touch a metal part of the computer case (or a grounded metal object) to discharge any static electricity. Static can damage RAM and other components. If you want to be extra safe, wear an anti-static wrist strap — they cost a few dollars and clip to the case. Most repair shop floors are deliberately kept bare in the tech area for this reason — carpet builds up static much more than tile or concrete. If you're working on carpet at home, be extra careful and ground yourself more often. It's not something you need to be overly worried about, but it's good practice.
10 A Note on RAM Prices in 2026
I'd be doing you a disservice if I didn't mention this: RAM prices have gone up significantly in 2026. The global demand for memory chips — driven largely by the AI industry building massive data centres — has created a shortage that's pushed prices higher for everyone, including regular consumers buying a simple 16 GB kit for a home PC.
A 16 GB DDR4 kit (2x8GB) that might have cost around $70–90 CAD not that long ago is now running closer to $150+ for budget brands like Timetec, and $220+ for a name brand like Corsair. DDR5 is even pricier. It's still one of the more affordable upgrades compared to buying a whole new computer, but it's worth knowing that you might be paying a real premium right now.

But if your RAM usage is under 70% and your computer is slow for other reasons, don't throw money at RAM you don't need — put it toward an SSD instead.
